After noticing that Ika musume still hasn't been subbed, we threw together these subs real quick. After doing a quick quality check to make sure everything made sense, we've now released it.
We can guarantee the subs will make sense, though considering these are speed subs, don't expect perfection.

Quick note, thanks for all the supporting comments, as well as criticisms. It always helps in gauging just how good (or bad) of a job we did, and indicates what needs improvement next time. We literally threw together these subs in two and a half hours with a two man team, so the quality might be subpar, so we apologize for that.

ReplyDeleteNo offense taken. To be honest, we decided to post this one episode for those that wanted to finally see the episode. It seemed kind of weird that, although the raw has been out for a while, there were no subs.
We're not aiming to be a quality fansub group, so we probably will not release much more after this episode.
I guess this is our way of protesting Crunchyroll's "simulcast" that is wayy after the initial air date.

ReplyDeleteDon't put too much stock in the negs; new groups are how the scene grows. For a speed sub, this was really good -- I noticed only a sentence or two that was clumsy or didn't make sense. Thanks for subbing this!

The XviD encoding was done in haste in response for people who have requested for it, so I wasn't able to pay much attention to its quality. It'll look much better after this release.
Also, we are trying to sub shows that takes more than a day to come out, so if CrunchyRoll does a good job of simulcasting the subbed version and FFFpeeps can make their wonderful fansubs quickly, then I guess we'll be looking for other shows, where fans are waiting for them to be subbed. :)
I think you guys should continue to sub this series for consistency purpose since you guys are doing well & many fans prefer to watch subs from a fansub group rather than just any first/fastest release

ReplyDeleteso far so good. no problems in the subs keep up the good work. an advice thou its ok if you listen or not. please try not to make your subs eye appealing kinda disturbs the viewers focusing the show rather than focusing the subs if you get what you mean and please if possible translate it all in english its a very professional way. other subs just leave it japanese like the word "eroge" just make it adult game or almost accurately to that word. overall its good. simplicity can become great. looking for the 2nd episodes of your Ika Musume and good luck ^^

ReplyDeleteI'm not quite sure I follow what you mean, but I'm just trying to let you know there's already a commercial version which would avoid the terminology issues you mentioned.
Generally speaking, fansubs have been done by and for Japanophiles and the like, rather than the mass market. Now that standard, commercial translations are often streamed (and ripped) just shortly after a show airs in Japan, it should be more important than ever for things to remain that way. There's little sense in fansubbers working to duplicate an already available commercial translation rather than providing a less heavily localized alternative for those who prefer it.

not really much of the words but you get my point. it destroys the essence of the anime and diverting the viewers because of reading the text.
in short i want this group if they ever have a future project to make. as simple as possible and very professional as possible. fansubs gets a little competitive and popular to beat other rivals rather than making the viewers watch the most clean and simple subbing that they ever seen. so that they feel to watch an anime what aired in japan.

That of course are some extreme examples, the flipside of that coin is that we now have some fansubber who even feel the need to translate the word "tsundere". That youtube "documentary" is just one point of view and not the universal truth how to fansub. There are other views on this matter.
ReplyDelete@Shurikens - Although I disagree with part of it, I certainly don't mind your opinion at all, but I do think you should be more careful about what information you base it on. That "documentary" is, in fact, just a polemic where somebody's making a personal rant, some of which sounded like it was being read straight from the Encyclopedia Dramatica article on weeaboos, while showing only those examples of each that they carefully cherry-picked to support their views. The same kind of person also likes to convince people who don't know any better that everything was always family-friendly prior to the turn of the millennium, when nothing could be further from the truth. Always beware of anyone wearing nostalgia goggles.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you that a fully localized version is more comfortable to watch, and this is indeed what most people want. The only thing I would disagree with you on is whether fansub groups should be striving for that when there's already a commercial version available for exactly that purpose, rather than cater to the portion of the audience who prefer not to sacrifice accuracy and/or like a few Japanese words thrown in for flavor and exclusivity to their particular segment of the fandom. It's up to each group to decide what their style is and who they wish to appeal to. The commercial versions will, of course, always try to appeal to the largest audience possible in order to maximize sales and thus keep their producers in business.
You also need to bear in mind that there's little sense in comparing early fansubs to more recent ones because the circumstances were drastically different. There were few or usually no alternative versions for those shows, nearly all of the potential audience didn't speak a word of Japanese, and it wasn't like to today when you can pause and minimize your media player to do a quick web search if necessary. It was considerably more to tedious to rewind back to a line an onscreen note that you couldn't finish reading in time, and of course impossible for viewers to disable or edit the subs if they were blocking something important or causing a distraction. The existing fandom was also a lot smaller and they needed to bring in people who were completely new to the whole thing, so for the most part the fansubs of the time had the same goals as a licensed version would have.
ReplyDeleteOne of the wonderful things about current technology, though, is you no longer even need to serve just one audience at a time. There's already a least one group who include two subtitle tracks, with one localized for a general audience, and the other unlocalized for those who prefer it that way. It takes little more effort than doing a search and replace in most cases, and then everybody gets the style they enjoy watching.
